Lionel L. Wilson
Dr. Lionel L. Wilson died in 2006. He was a key figure in the introduction and development of quality management in Australia, from the mid-1960s until the present time. He played key roles in the introduction of hospital accreditation, the credentialing of medical staff, and the use of formal quality assurance methods. He was an adviser to the Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health on matters relating to quality management and quality assurance in hospitals. For ten years he was a member of the Board of Sutherland Hospital, in Sydney. His consultancy, Qual-med Pty Ltd, offered specialty services on all matters relating to the implementation of hospital quality management programs. Dr. Wilson was a graduate of Sydney University Medical School and a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. His many accomplishments included: Federal President of the Australian Medical Association, Chairman of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards, Chairman of the World Medical Association, and Life Governor of the Australian Medical Postgraduate Federation. He was a member of the Order of Australia, a recipient of the Gold Medal of the Australian Medical Association, and the first recipient of the Medal of Achievement of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards.
